Common Springfield IL Brick Repairs made by Rick Williams Masonry
Springfield’s brick homes and buildings are subject to many types of damage that will warrant repairs, especially the structures that are more than 50 years old. At Rick Williams Masonry, we can handle any brick repair task, but below are some of the more common problems with brick that we specialize in rectifying.
-
Mortar Deterioration
Caused primarily by moisture penetration. Often times this is accelerated by previous owners coating the bricks with paints or sealants that do not allow moisture to escape. Generally speaking this type of brick repair problem is addressed by tuckpointing or re-pointing the mortar joints.
-
Brick Deterioration
Many Springfield homeowners and business owners will notice their bricks cracking or spalling. Usually caused by freezing & expanding moisture within the bricks during the winter months, or the building’s foundation settling, putting downward pressure on the bricks. Deterioration can also occur when a previous brick repair job was performed using mortar that was harder than the original mortar.
-
Brick Erosion
Early homes were constructed using bricks that were much softer than today’s. Unlike modern kilns, the kilns used to fire these old bricks lacked adequate firing control, leading to softer bricks that are more prone to erosion over the years. Additionally, invasive cleaning techniques like power washing can also lead to brick erosion, as the high pressure water will wash away the harder, outer crust of the brick.
-
Structural Failures
Noticing your brick walls bowing inward, outwards, or collapsing constitutes a catastrophic structural failure. Often caused by massive amounts of water entering your brick walls (leaking roof), or excessive foundation settling & heaving.
-
Stair-Step Mortar Cracks
Fine cracks in your brick’s mortar that resemble stair-steps. Usually caused by foundation settling & upward heaving. If no other brick repairs are needed, these can generally be fixed by re-pointing.
-
Efflorescence
Not exactly a brick repair, but rather a white powdery substance on your bricks. Occurs when salts in the mortar or brick are dissolved by excess moisture and migrate to the surface of the bricks. This can usually be taken care of by carefully scrubbing the area with a stiff brush and water 7 & a biodegradable detergent.
