• Cracks

Masonry cracks in chimney bricks are caused by a variety of reasons, but most commonly from excessive moisture becoming trapped. Once trapped, it will freeze and expand, causing cracks. Cracks in the crown or firebox are considered a fire-safety hazard by the NFPA.

• Water Penetration

Water can enter a chimney at many different points. Faulty flashing on the roof, or cracks in the crown or chimney itself for example. Aside from the usual devastation and mold that water penetration can cause, it can also lead to the deterioration of exterior mortar and can extensively damage the interior walls in which chimney repair will be needed.

• Damaged Chimney Crown

A chimney crown is the top element of a chimney which covers the chimney from the flue liner to the        chimney edge. The crown should have a downward slope which directs the water away from the flue edge. Damage to the crown will cause many problems in which repairs will be required.

• Chimney Deterioration

Like any other building material, brick and mortar are subject to deterioration after exposure to the elements over a certain period of time. The external elements gradually degrade the walls of the chimney. If your chimney is to the point of major deterioration and is crumbling, then it is time to rebuild because the bricks and mortar have crossed their survival limit.

• Leaning Chimney

This may seem obvious. If you notice your chimney leaning (even slightly) it needs to be inspected immediately. Do not use your fireplace until it has been properly inspected by a professional like us.
